    • THE CHALLENGE

    A $2B mental health platform that only spoke English

    Our client started in 2016 and, after Series C funding in 2021, reached a $2 billion valuation. They offer top-quality mental healthcare worldwide. For the first few years, though, they only served English speakers in the US.
    To go global, they needed native language support. That meant three challenges: scaling the existing design, supporting new countries and supporting new languages.
    • THE APPROACH

    Separate the words from the code

    We made the product ready for any language across the frontend, backend and email, then added right-to-left support.

    Frontend

    We moved UI-embedded content into JSON files to separate code from language, and generalized common content. Helpline numbers now display dynamically based on the user’s location. We brought in Crowdin for translations and connected it to the GitHub pull-request workflow, so pipelines handle translations without manual developer work.

    Backend

    We followed the same pattern, serving translated content from a hybrid of database and YAML files, with Crowdin providing translations.

    Emails

    We integrated Iterable, whose locale-based templates translate content automatically based on each user’s preference, and migrated existing emails to these easy-to-edit templates.

    Right-to-left languages

    We added bidirectional text and icons that mirror based on language – for example, the direction of the back arrow.
